Split Mississippi Court Rejects Appeal Over Delayed Trial

Cliff Johnson of the MacArthur Justice Center, which has been active in suing the state over long pretrial detentions, said Scott's case is part of a statewide problem.

"Despite the fact that both the United States and Mississippi constitutions guarantee criminal defendants the right to a speedy trial, far too often those awaiting trial in Mississippi languish in jail for years before getting their day in court," he wrote in an email to The Associated Press.
